Cedar Hollow - Code of Conduct


Our Code of Conduct was created with three goals in mind. 

  1. To promote a positive learning environment where each child can achieve maximum potential and development.

  2. To foster a respectful, friendly, and inclusive environment in which to work and play.

  3. To ensure that the school will be a physically safe environment free from violence and the threat of violence as per the TVDSB Safe School Policy.

Our Expectations

Our expectation is that each student will be treated with respect at all times, will show respect to other students and to adults and finally will demonstrate respect for school property and the property of others.  Lastly, we expect that each student will follow classroom rules cooperatively at all times. 

Behaviour Expectations

  • Students will attend regularly, arrive on time, behave appropriately and complete assignment work to the best of their ability

  • Students will enter and leave the school, and walk in the hall in a quiet, orderly manner

  • Students will play cooperatively and safely, refraining from acts of violence or threat of violence

  • Students will use appropriate language at all times

  • Students will remove their hats before entering the classroom

  • Students will dress in a respectful fashion that is appropriate for the season and the learning environment

  • Students will keep their hands and feet to themselves

  • Snow, sticks and stones will stay on the ground

  • Potentially dangerous items or weapons (including replicas of weapons) of any kind are to be left at home

  • Physical, verbal (oral or written), online or cyber bullying, sexual or psychological abuse or discrimination on the basis of race, culture, religion, gender, language disability, sexual orientation or any other attribute is unacceptable

  • Unauthorized use of any Social Media or any gaming sites is prohibited

  • Unauthorized photos or videos of students are not permitted

*All members of the school community must:

Respect the need of others to work in an environment that is conducive to learning and teaching, including by ensuring that cell phones and other personal mobile devices are used only during instructional time (as directed by an educator), for health and medical purposes and/or to support special education needs. 

Progressive Discipline

Remember that good management consists of rules enforced but also of positive reinforcement.  Classroom rules are essential and should conform to the rules developed for the school. School discipline is a collective endeavour.  All staff members can and should assist.

Students who live up to school expectations will help everyone enjoy the excitement of learning in a safe and supportive environment.  However, if incidents do arise, the following range of discipline may be applied by teachers, support staff or school administration:

  • Reminders with suggestions for improvement

  • Warning about the consequence of continued misbehaviour

  • Re-location within the classroom

  • Removal or restricting certain school privileges

  • A conversation with the Principal

  • A phone call to the parents or guardians at home or at work

  • Setting up an individual student/teacher contract

  • Repair, restitution or community service

  • In-school suspension

  • Formal suspension from school – activities which require consideration of suspension include:

    • Uttering a threat

    • Possession of drugs or alcohol

    • Being under the influence of alcohol

    • Swearing at a person in authority

    • Vandalism

    • Bullying/Cyberbullying

**Police involvement may be required for serious violent or illegal activities.

Students should always be provided the opportunity to make a good choice or to right a situation.  Give them the responsibility and the power to decide how they want to proceed. Sometimes students need time to process and de-escalate a situation.  Providing them with this time allows them to learn how to solve the problem and develop their conflict resolution skills. The focus should always be on the learning opportunity and moving forward. 

Dress Code

Cedar Hollow encourages students and staff to express their individuality and personal choice through their manner of dress. In doing so, all students and staff are expected to dress in a respectful manner that is appropriate and safe for school activities.

Clothing choices will ensure that:

●       Bare back or midriff are not visible

●       Chest and upper thighs are appropriately covered. It is recommended that skirts/shorts/dresses be quarter-thigh length with no visible underwear showing

●       Footwear is safe for all types of school activities and is worn at all times

●       Headwear of any type is not inside the classroom, except when required for medical or religious reasons    

●       No vulgar, profane or discriminatory language or imagery is visible on clothing or accessories nor the advertising of products that are illegal for minors to purchase

  • Bandanas that represent gang colours are not to be worn anywhere on the body 

In the event of a dress code violation, a reasonable effort will be made to contact parents as well as address the issue with the student. The dress code will be shared with teachers, parents, and students in September and again in April of each year, as well as posted on the school website. All teachers and parents are encouraged to review the contents of the dress code with students. The final decision will rest with the administration.
